Merengue opened in 1994 at 160 Blue Hill Avenue, Roxbury, Massachusetts 02119. The owners’ names are Nivia and Hector Piña. Nivia is from Puerto Rico, and Hector is from the Dominican Republic.
In 1986, Hector moved to Boston from the Dominican Republic to live with his brother. In 1994, Hector opened Merengue with a capacity of 26 people. In 2001, Nivia joined Merengue, and the business expanded to a capacity of 100 people.
Merengue has been catering for the Red Sox for over 17 years. Famous baseball players like to eat at Merengue because the food is Dominican food, such as mondongo, fish, mangú, cheese, and plátano con salami. Merengue is a community, a family, and an opportunity. Culture is important in Merengue because it presents the Dominican Republic to Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
