About Humphreys Street Studios

Humphreys Street Studios was founded in 2002 by Joe Wheelwright and Gneal Widett in Dorchester, MA. They developed it in the long shuttered Daloz Dry Cleaners building and turned it into a studio. It includes painters, sculptures, designers, furniture makers, metal workers, and more. One of the tenants named Gillian Christy is a sculptor who is inspired to create artwork based on objects one may view daily. I like the process of how the blacksmith, Andy Good, creates objects using tools like a hammer to bend and cut items like iron and metal.

Before it was Humphreys Street Studios it was a dry cleaners. Then they created the studio because they wanted to be in the beauty and culture of this area of Boston. Then later in 2019 the building went up for sale for 3.5 million dollars. The Humphreys Street Studios building has about 26,000 square feet with 40 workspaces for the 40 tenants. Humphreys Street Studios also provides a courtyard and a backyard.

Humphreys Street Studios helps the area because the members are valuable contributors to the Boston area. Also, if a school decides to take a field trip there, they will tell you different things about the community and what they do.
